Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What can I do with a degree in  Biological Sciences?
    •  Majors may pursue careers in research, teaching, management, healthcare or many non-traditional careers.  Research positions may include working as a technician in a laboratory or as a field scientist studying basic science.  Students may teach at the junior high or high school level, and with advanced degrees, colleges and universities.  Many biological sciences majors are employed by governmental agencies or private foundations in areas such as conservation biology, fish and wildlife management, forestry, and forensics.  Others choose to work in the healthcare industry in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and neuroscience among many others.  A variety of non-traditional career options exist as well with students combining degrees in biology and law or business or even working as journalists.
  • Why Biological Sciences at ISU?
    • The School of Biological Sciences at Illinois State University seeks to advance the growing body of biological knowledge across a wide range of sub-disciplines. We educate and mentor student scientists spanning undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels.  Teaching in classrooms, laboratories, and field sites promotes a sophisticated understanding of biological principles and of scientific methodologies, as well as prepares students to apply their expertise to relevant societal issues. In addition to an extensive list of offered courses, many with hands-on laboratory work, we encourage students to get involved beyond just taking classes, such as joining student organizations or conducting an independent research project!
